The Indian Culture

India is a country having thousands of years of history and culture. Various ancient cultures from times before it was even called India have shaped the land into what it is today: a very colorful place full of rich tradition and celebrations. Most of the people living in India follow the religion of Hinduism and many of its sub-religions, though there are people who follow many other religions like Islam, Jainism and Christianity all of which give India its unique flavor.

As a Nepali student, you won’t find many differences with the way the Indians live their lives. They indeed have very similar interests, food preferences, behaviors, and character like the Nepali people. You might find that the streets and local shops are very similar to the ones which you are used to in Nepal. Rickshaws and street side food stands are also a common sight to see in and around the various parts of the country.

Buses and tempos are also available in India and you will see that most people prefer to take the public transport. There are train stations that cover most parts of India, so, if you are looking to travel within India during your break, then you have easy access to almost all parts. There are always kind local people and guides to show you what the history and tradition of each significant place is. The sheer diversity of India’s culture has been the inspiration for many writers, poets and artists. Although the Indian men commonly wear dhoti or lungi, and the women wear sari, these days it is common to see modern fashion amongst the youth like jeans, trousers, shirts, suits, etc. However, their etiquette discourages skin exposure and wearing tight or transparent clothes.

Map and Climate

There are large variations in the climate from one Indian region to another due to its vast size. The overall climate of India is Humid and tropically wet. There are however very dry and mountainous climates that cover the trans-Himalayan belt in the northern side of the western Himalayas. It is cold and windswept unlike most of India.

India consists of 5 regions, which are: East India, North India, Northeast India, South India and West India. The southern parts of the country lie around the equatorial belt, so, the climate is very hot and humid in places like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Eastern parts of the country constitutes of a very tropical climate with all the tropical rain-forests located around places like Odisha, Assam and Sikkim.

As a Nepali, having India as the neighboring country, our childhood and the TV culture have been heavily influenced by the Indian culture. The climate is very similar to that of our country except in the southern parts which are mostly hot. You will easily be able to adapt to the Indian lifestyle.
